ENDOWED FUNDS

ENDOWED UNRESTRICTED FUNDS


Contributors who wish their donations to have the broadest perpetual impact in improving the quality of life in our community provide planned or direct gifts for the Foundation's unrestricted endowment. Income from unrestricted funds provide the most flexibility to the Board of Directors in making grants to address the concerns of the day. Named Funds may be established with a $5,000 gift and may be built over time.

John A. Barr, Jr. Fund
A memorial Fund in honor of founding Foundation board member and Essex Savings Bank president, John Barr.

Bee and Missionary Society of First Congregational Church of Middletown Fund
Established to continue their 175 years of support to organizations and worthy causes in the community.

The Couch Family Fund
Established by Rev. A. Edward Couch in honor of his parents.

Edmund T. Delaney Fund
Established in his memory to support the community he loved by his wife, Barbara.

Lee and Welles Guilmartin Fund
Established to help grow the Foundation and to benefit the community and its residents.

Harding Family Fund
Established by Peter and Eileen Harding to help improve the community where it is most needed.

Kalayjian Family Fund
Established by Marcia and David Kalayjian to provide lasting benefit to the community to which they are devoted.

J. Guy Lombardo Fund
A memorial Fund established by Joe Lombardo in memory of his son Guy.

Sonya and Jeff Madoff Fund
Begun to support the community they have enjoyed for 40 wonderful years.

William McCann/Best Cleaners Fund
A memorial Fund established by Esther McCann in appreciation of our community.

Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company Fund
Established by the company to support the community of its home office.

Middlesex Enhancement Fund
Begun by the Foundation Board of Directors to receive contributions large and small to help improve the quality of life in Middlesex County.

PCI medical Fund
Begun with gratitude for being able to support the community by PCI owners Clio and Philip Coles.

David and Barbara Preston Fund
Established to benefit the community now and in the future.

River View Cemetery Fund
Established by the Essex based cemetery to benefit the entire community.

Diane T. and William J. Russell Fund
Established by the Russells to begin their charitable giving plan.

Sams Family Fund
Former board member David Sams established this fund with his wife Betsy to provide continuing support to the Foundation's good works and to provide positive momentum for the future.

Saunders Family Fund
New Foundation Board member, Anita Ford Saunders is building this unrestricted fund over time to benefit the community's changing needs.

Jean and Biff Shaw Fund
Established by the Shaws to repay their community for the benefits they have derived from it.

Patti Anne Vassia Fund
Begun to receive future planned gifts.

Susan B. and William K. Wasch Fund
Set up by the Wasch's to coordinate their giving now and in the future to the community they love.

Jan Youngblood Cook Fund
Established to benefit the community now and in the future.

ENDOWED RESTRICTED FUNDS

ENDOWED FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS
Field of Interest Funds support a specific purpose, geographic area or charitable goal. Gifts to these funds specify broad areas such as the arts, education, the environment, health care or services to a specific town or region. Named Funds can be established with a donation of $20,000 or more, and may be built over time. Any Fund may be added to by anyone at any time. Gifts, of any size, to a specific area or interest, give the Board of Directors discretion to select organizations that can most effectively address the chosen field of interest.

Animals: Respect and Friendship Fund
This fund was established to support nonprofit organizations that provide care for animals, including: rescue and protection; shelter and comfort; veterinary care and healing; toys, food and exercise; placement of pets; and training animals and people for shared gifts of companionship, therapy and assistance and enjoyment.

Anonymous Fund to Enhance the Environment
Support of Middlesex County botanical beautification with emphasis on natural beauty, wildflowers and native species, open space and visual simplicity on a competitive basis. Grants may include assessment, planning, design, planting, restoration and new initiatives.

The Arts Fund
Established by Derry D'Oench and then added to by other arts lovers, this fund helps to promote arts of all kinds countywide.

Sherry and Herb Clark Family Fund
Provides benefit to the people and communities of the Valley Shore Area.

Kirkpatrick Family Fund
Supports arts organizations and arts initiatives with priority to Middletown organizations to strengthen infrastructure and/or to support public presentations, on a competitive basis using excellence as the standard.

Loffredo Performing Arts Fund
Established by Connecticut Heritage Productions in memory of Dr. Louis and Eva Loffredo to benefit arts organizations serving Middletown, East Hampton and/or Portland on a competitive basis as determined by the Foundation's Grants Committee.

Howard and Yvonne McAuliffe Fund
Supports basic human needs and programs for the less fortunate.

Kathy and Willard McRae Fund
Supports education programs in Middletown.

Middlesex Mutual Assurance Fund
Promotes safer communities with priority to motor vehicle, marine and personal safety.

Ann and George Petry Fund
Supports local arts programs and activities, established by their daughter Liz.

Pompea Family/Primary Steel Fund
Provides support for future manufacturing workforce development.

Fund for the Preservation and Stewardship of Natural Areas
Richard and Esther Goodwin established this Fund to support the preservation and stewardship of the Burnham Brook Preserve in East Haddam. Future planned gifts to the Fund will help it grow. Income from the Fund will be used to make grants to The Nature Conservancy or other organizations as determined by a special Fund Committee.

Elizabeth Swaim Middletown Fund
A generous bequest started this Fund to benefit the people and the city of Middletown.

Rachel and Chuck Wiltsie Fund
Supports basic human needs and programs for the less fortunate.

Fund for Women & Girls
Established to empower women and girls to be self-reliant and reach their potential. Women & Girls Brochure (PDF)

Bee and Missionary Society Fund for Women & Girls
Provides support for the Fund for Women & Girls Committee to make grants as above.

Rev. Mary Klaaren Fund for Women & Girls
Lee Guilmartin established this fund in 2007 to honor the many contributions and service provided by Mary when she announced her retirement as pastor of Middletown's South Congregational Church after 28 years of service.

ENDOWED DESIGNATED FUNDS
Specified charitable organizations receive income from Designated Funds. This type of fund requires a $20,000 minimum donation to be established and may be built over time. Any Fund may be added to by anyone at any time.

Anonymous Named Fund
A generous donor has established a designated fund which is being built over time to purchase large print books for Russell Library.

Edythe and Arthur Director Family Funds
In 2007 and 2008 the Directors established five separate designated funds to benefit agencies that have played an important part in the community and where they and/or their children have participated, volunteered and benefitted. Each fund may be added to by anyone to benefit the good works of these organizations.
The beneficiaries of these designated funds are:

Carolyn R. Greenleaf Fund
Established in memory of Carolyn R. Greenleaf.

Ingersoll Outdoor Center Fund
Established by a bequest from Loretta Ingersoll, this special designated fund will make annual distributions to make capital improvements to improve the Northern Middlesex YMCA Camp Ingersoll in Portland.

Jacqueline Hubbard and Norman Needleman
Honorary Fund for the Ivoryton Playhouse
Established by Sherry and Herb Clark in honor of Jacqui and Norm's outstanding contributions to the Playhouse. This fund, being built over time, encourages donations from others to support the preservation and maintenance of the Playhouse in the future.

Elizabeth Swaim Arts Enrichment Fund
A major bequest began this Fund that provides grants to enrich minds and expand the horizons of Middletown K through 12 public school students with arts programming.

Elizabeth Swaim Fund for the Middlesex County Historical Society
A bequest established this Fund to support the Middlesex County Historical Society.

Tri-Town Youth Services Fund
Started by the Whelen family to support positive youth activities in the area and to encourage others to add to the Fund, which they may do at anytime.

Patti Anne Vassia Fund for Administration
Established in 2007 by Board members and friends in recognition of the efforts and accomplishments of Patti Anne Vassia, who served for 10 years as the Foundation's first president.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
A scholarship fund can be structured to benefit students at any education level, or for a specific institution. A scholarship fund can also be created to honor a loved one. This type of fund requires a $20,000 minimum donation to be established and may be built over time. Any Fund may be added to by anyone at any time.

Ashworth Family Scholarship Fund
The Ashworth family established this Scholarship Fund in memory of Heather Lind Ashworth, a long time librarian at Hale-Ray High School in East Haddam. Scholarships will be determined by Hale-Ray teachers and staff and will begin when the Fund is augmented by a future planned gift. Additional unendowed gifts began providing scholarships in 2006.

Charles Munson Burr, Jr. Family Fund
Harry Eben Burr is building this Fund over time to honor his father. When funded it will provide scholarships for economically disadvantaged Wesleyan students.

Arthur and Edythe Director Family Scholarship Fund
One of five designated funds established by the Directors. This scholarship fund is intended to provide support for Cromwell High School students.

Joan Matz Music Scholarship Fund
A memorial fund established by the friends and family of Joan Matz to provide scholarships at UCONN to students studying choral conducting and/or singing.

Elizabeth Mary Pernel Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by Middletown High School 1965 and 1966 alumni in memory of their classmates Ed and Terri Pernel's daughter. The Fund provides an annual scholarship to a Middletown High School senior.

ENDOWED DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
Named advisors make recommendations for grants from Donor Advised Funds. This type of fund requires a $20,000 minimum donation to be established and may be built over time. Any Fund may be added to by anyone at any time.

J. Guy Lombardo Donor Advised Fund
A transfer from a private foundation, this fund provides grants to local charities recommended by the Lombardo family.

Robert A. Mallimson, Ph.D. Fund
Established by an anonymous donor in recognition of Dr. Mallimson's compassion and caring for people of the area.

Wesleyan University Community Fund
This Fund is just one of Wesleyan's visible commitments to its community. At the University's recommendation, grants will provide support to community activities on a competitive basis.

AGENCY ENDOWMENT FUNDS

Charitable organizations may establish Agency Endowment Funds to help them meet both their current and future needs. Agency Endowment Funds can be established with a donation of $20,000 or more, and may be built over time. Although an agency endowment fund can only be established by the nonprofit agency itself, donations by others to these funds are welcome at any time.

Camp Hazen YMCA
Established in 2007 to diversify the growing Camp Hazen endowment and to support the Community Foundation in its early years.

Weitzman - Vance Community Health Center Fund
Established to help secure the continued delivery of the dental and health services by the Community Health Center's many programs, and to assist the Community Foundation in growing its endowment.

Gilead Community Services Fund
This Fund insures future funding diversity for this behavioral health organization and encourages staff and board members to give to their endowment to maximize a challenge match donation.

Middlesex United Way Fund
The Foundation's first Organizational Fund was established as an example to all nonprofits of the value of endowment as a funding stream for future programs and services.

Oddfellows Playhouse Endowment Fund
Began to help support the Community Foundation and diversify the investment of their small and growing endowment.

UNENDOWED FUNDS

UNENDOWED DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
Unendowed Donor Advised Funds can be established to provide tax advantages in one or more years while donors decide where their charitable contributions will best meet their giving objectives. Unlike endowed funds, the principle of these funds may be distributed. Foundation staff can provide information to help donors, if they wish. Donor Advised Fund distribution recommendations are approved by the Board of Directors to maintain IRS compliance for the tax advantages received when making gifts.
