Building Strong Communities Together

A strong community exists because friends and neighbors believe in supporting their towns today and making sure each generation is offered every opportunity possible for a vibrant future. A group of Durham and Middlefield citizens set out in the early 1990s to do just that – provide for the youth of their town. Together, they launched Durham-Middlefield Youth & Family Services (DMYFS), a nonprofit organization, dedicated to the youth and families of Durham and Middlefield.

Since that first opening day, DMYFS has worked with residents, town officials of Durham and Middlefield, the school district, and a wide variety of organizations and community groups to provide programs and resources to empower children and families to make positive choices for a healthy community.

Recently the Board spent time thinking strategically about the future of DMYFS, not just in terms of its programs and services, but its fiscal sustainability. The Board, after careful consideration and much discussion, determined it was time work with a community organization which focuses on building endowments for a strong future. They contacted the Community Foundation of Middlesex County and established the DURHAM-MIDDLEFIELD YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES FUND at the Community Foundation.

Establishing an endowment fund through the Community Foundation is an important next step in supporting the operation of DMYFS, today and in the future. It’s lasting. The Community Foundation is proud and humbled by the trust of the DMYFS Board of Directors has for CFMC and its services. CFMC believes in fulfilling the hopes of DMYFS for both the organization itself and its place in the Durham and Middlefield communities. We know that this new partnership will continue the great work of DMYFS of providing financial and other resources for the benefit of DMYFS and the youth and families of the towns.
