Carolyn Greenleaf was a resident of Essex who was passionate about music and who worked tirelessly to promote music education in her community. Sadly, Carolyn passed away at an early age in 2004. Her friends and family wished to honor her memory and in 2007 established a merit award for students who show great dedication to and promise in their musical studies.

This award was created to keep Carolyn’s legacy alive and to honor her celebration of and passion for music.

In 2008 the Carolyn Greenleaf Memorial Award Committee was formed to discuss and plan the future of the award. It was decided to attempt to raise enough money to establish a self-sustaining fund. A concert was held and the goal was met. The Committee then asked the Community Foundation to hold and administer the funds, which it whole heartedly agreed to do.

Applications are offered each semester award recipients receive tuition for a semester of lessons at the Community Music School in Centerbrook.

“Carolyn was talented and giving and inspired so many in our community. It is the Committee’s hope that by assisting talented young people with their musical education that Carolyn’s memory and legacy will be kept alive and that her favorite saying – ‘Listen to the Music! Don’t you just love it?!’ – will live on in the hearts of many.”
