Creating a Legacy through a Lens

Nicholas Wallace Ramcke had a true photographer’s eye – an innate sense of the world around him and an ability to translate his view into a photograph. For Nick, photography was more than an art form or a possible profession; photography was Nick’s passion, a way to capture what he saw and the feelings it evoked and then share those emotions with his family and his community.

Unfortunately, a year after his graduation, Nick passed away. With Nick’s tragic death in 2011, his family struggled with their grief, wondering how to cope with the loss of this bright and talented young man and what they could do in his memory that would make a difference in his community.

The Ishmans and Ramckes knew what Nick would have wanted most – he would have wanted to find a way to help his fellow VRHS students who shared his love of photography. He would have found a way to make sure they had the tools and equipment necessary to share their view of the world with their community through photos.

The Ishmans and Ramckes worked with the Community Foundation of Middlesex County to establish the Nicholas Ramcke Fund, to help Nick’s fellow students at VRHS who share his passion for photography and graphic arts. Through this fund Nicholas’ family will connect art, their love for Nick, and his passion for photography by supporting students in their artistic pursuits.

The Ishmans and Ramckes have created a skateboarding event – The Nicholas Ramcke Memorial Contest. The proceeds of the event will provide opportunities to support a visual arts student at VRHS. Held at Plattwood Park in Deep River, the event will bring together skaters, friends and family to celebrate Nick’s legacy. A skateboard featuring Nick’s photography and commemorating the annual event will be a key feature of the contest.

“Our dream is to provide local students with the tools necessary to succeed and further advance their passion for photography and the graphic arts.” – Nick Ramcke’s Family

Nick’s legacy – creativity, passion and friendship – will continue for years to come through the Nicholas Ramcke Fund.
