Buzzy Levin: A Beloved Family Man, Champion of the Community

Family and community were everything to Jerome “Buzzy” Levin.

Levin died at the age of 90 on Friday, June 2, surrounded by family and friends. Buzzy, as he was affectionately known, passed up a career in professional baseball after his father died to take over the family business, Malloves Jewelers in Middletown, a business his son Marc now runs. The Board of Directors and staff of the Community Foundation of Middlesex County extend their deepest condolences to the Levin family and to the community at large for the loss of a remarkable man.

Community, and particularly our youth, were top priority in Buzzy’s life. Active with organizations throughout Middletown and beyond, Buzzy’s greatest joy were his neighbors, friends, and fellow Middletown residents who he helped in quiet ways. The small things Buzzy did, that often went unnoticed, were of the greatest importance to him. Buzzy loved sports – particularly baseball and golf – and recognized the importance of participating in sports and its impact on the youth of our community. Among Buzzy’s many accomplishments was as co-founder of the Middletown Chapter of Little League baseball in 1948. He worked to change the rules so that every player on a team had a chance at bat at least once in a game and each player took to the the field for an inning. Buzzy believed that all kids deserved a fair chance to play the game – regardless of skill level! He was also active in his synagogue and a member of dozens of community organizations including the Middletown Elks, the Kiwanis Club, the B’Nai B’rith. Somehow he also found the time to coordinate his high school class reunions every year!
